Which Grand Rapids-area cities charge a local income tax?
Money and taxes
If you’re comparing places to live or work around Grand Rapids, here’s a money detail worth knowing: most of the suburbs do NOT have a city income tax — but two cities do. Grand Rapids charges 1.5% on residents and 0.75% on people who work in the city but live elsewhere. Walker (on the northwest side) charges 1% and 0.5%. That tax is on top of state and federal income tax, and it’s separate from your property taxes. The surrounding suburbs — including Wyoming, Kentwood, Grandville, East Grand Rapids, and Rockford — don’t charge a local income tax at all. So two people with the same paycheck and similar houses can owe noticeably different amounts depending on which side of a city line they live or work on. (In Kent County, only Grand Rapids and Walker have a local income tax.)
