City income tax in St. Clair County
Money and taxes
Michigan lets cities charge their own income tax on top of the state’s, and about two dozen of them do. In St. Clair County, one city does: Port Huron. If you live in Port Huron, you’ll pay the city a flat one percent of your earned income, on top of state and federal taxes. If you live elsewhere but work at a job inside the city, you’ll owe a lower rate, half a percent, as a non-resident.
The county’s other cities don’t have one. Marysville, St. Clair, Marine City, Algonac, and Yale all skip the city income tax, so people there pay only the state and federal income taxes. The thing to watch is that the tax follows the job as well as the home, so a Marysville resident who commutes to a Port Huron job will still owe Port Huron’s non-resident rate on what they earn there.
None of this touches your property tax bill, which is separate. And as always, a city can vote to add or drop an income tax over time, so it’s worth a quick check if you’re weighing a move or a new job.
