Good news on car insurance: west Michigan is the cheap end of an expensive state
Cars and driving
Michigan has some of the highest car insurance costs in the country — that’s the price of its no-fault system, and it’s true no matter where in the state you live. But here’s the silver lining if you’re in the Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo area: west Michigan sits at the low end of Michigan’s rates. Where you live still affects your premium, and metro Detroit is in a league of its own — drivers there often pay roughly double what someone in Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo pays for the same coverage. So while you shouldn’t expect Ohio or Indiana prices, you’re likely paying among the lowest rates in the state. Two things are worth doing. First, since Michigan reformed its no-fault law, you can choose your level of PIP (personal injury protection) medical coverage instead of being locked into unlimited — if you already have strong health insurance, a lower PIP level can lower your premium, though it’s a real trade-off worth understanding before you pick. Second, because your rate depends heavily on your exact address, get quotes from a few companies whenever you move, even within west Michigan.
