Can you run an Airbnb here? Your city or township decides
Rules and licenses
Thinking about renting out your place on Airbnb or Vrbo? In Michigan, there’s no statewide law that says whether you can — it’s left entirely up to your city or township, and the rules vary a lot from one town to the next. Some communities welcome short-term rentals, some require a permit and a safety inspection, some cap how many there can be, and a few ban them in residential neighborhoods altogether. Lakefront and tourist towns tend to have the strictest rules, since that’s where vacation rentals cluster. Lawmakers in Lansing have spent years arguing over a bill that would override these local rules and let people rent almost anywhere — but as of early 2026 it still hasn’t passed, so for now your local government is in charge. Before you list a place, check with your city or township’s clerk or planning department to see whether short-term rentals are allowed and what permit you might need. (Either way, Michigan charges a 6% state use tax on stays shorter than 30 days.)
