Benton Harbor has a city income tax

Money and taxes

benton harbor city income tax berrien county

Most Michigan cities don’t have their own income tax — but Benton Harbor is one of about two dozen that do. If you live in the city, you pay 1% of what you earn to the city, on top of your state and federal taxes. If you live somewhere else but work inside Benton Harbor, you pay half that — 0.5% — on the money you earn here.

Living in the city means just that: you pay the resident rate whether you rent or own your home. And if you’re a Benton Harbor resident who works in another Michigan city that also has an income tax, you usually get credit for part of what you pay the other city, so the same dollars aren’t taxed twice.

The city runs its own income tax office — this isn’t part of your state return. You file a separate City of Benton Harbor return each year, and your employer may already be taking the tax out of your paycheck. The city’s Income Tax Department can walk you through the forms and payments.
