Is there a city income tax in Alpena County?

Money and taxes

Good news for your paycheck: no. Michigan lets cities charge their own income tax on top of the state’s, and about two dozen of them do, but Alpena, the county’s only city, isn’t one of them. Wherever you live in Alpena County, in the city or out in the townships, you’ll pay only the state and federal income taxes, with no separate city income tax coming out of your check.

A few Michigan cities do tax the people who work within their limits, even non-residents, but none of those cities are in or near Alpena County, so for almost everyone here it simply doesn’t come up.

As always, a city can vote to start or stop an income tax over time, so it’s worth a quick check if that ever changes. But for now, Alpena County is income-tax-free at the local level.
