Does Montmorency County have a city income tax?
Money and taxes
Here’s some good news for your paycheck: no. Michigan is one of a handful of states that lets cities charge their own income tax on top of the state’s — but only about two dozen Michigan cities actually do it, and none of them are anywhere near here.
In fact, Montmorency County doesn’t have a single incorporated city. Atlanta, the county seat, and Lewiston are both unincorporated communities, and Hillman is a village — and in Michigan, only cities are allowed to levy a local income tax. So no matter where you settle in the county, nobody charges you one.
The closest city that does have an income tax is Grayling, about 60 miles to the southwest. Unless you work there, it won’t touch your earnings. Wherever you land in Montmorency County — Atlanta, Lewiston, Hillman, or out in the townships — your wages stay yours as far as any local income tax is concerned.
