The Wheatland Music Festival
History and culture
Out in the southeast corner of the county, near Remus, the Wheatland Music Festival has been a fixture since 1974. Held on a 160-acre farm over a weekend in September (the weekend after Labor Day), it’s one of Michigan’s best-loved traditional-music gatherings: folk, bluegrass, and acoustic music on several stages, plus dance, storytelling, crafts, kids’ programs, and impromptu jam sessions all over the grounds.
It’s run by the non-profit Wheatland Music Organization, which keeps traditional arts going year-round with lessons and smaller events (including a Traditional Arts Weekend each May). The September festival draws tens of thousands of people, so if you live nearby, expect one busy, friendly weekend of music and extra traffic each year.
