Do you pay the Big Rapids income tax out here? Only if you work in the city
Money and taxes
Big Rapids is one of about two dozen Michigan cities that charge a local income tax — 1% for people who live in the city, and 0.5% for people who work in the city but live elsewhere. The key word is “in the city.” If your home is out here in the township, you’re not a Big Rapids resident, so you don’t owe the 1% resident tax on your income.
The one thing to know: if you live in the township but commute to a job inside the Big Rapids city limits, you’ll owe the 0.5% non-resident rate on the wages you earn there. Live and work outside the city and the city income tax doesn’t touch you at all.
If you’re not sure whether an address falls inside the city limits, the City of Big Rapids has an online address lookup.
