A lumberman's house in Big Rapids, willed to the city and full of county history

History and culture

museum mecosta county

The county museum in Big Rapids sits inside the house a lumber fortune built. It belonged to Fitch Phelps, one of the town’s leading early lumbermen. He was also a businessman who served in the state legislature. Like a lot of the big homes in old lumber towns, his was paid for by the pine that came down the rivers and through the mills. When Phelps’s widow, Harriet, died, she left the house to the city. A home built on timber money got a second life as the place that keeps the county’s memory.

The local historical society had been around since the 1890s, meeting in members’ parlors with nowhere permanent to put their collection. In 1965 they finally landed a building, taking over the former Phelps library, and the next year they opened the doors as the Mecosta County Historical Museum. It has held the corner of Stewart and Elm in Big Rapids ever since.

Inside, the story it tells is mostly the story of how the county got here at all. There is the lumber era that filled these woods with mills and railroads. There are the everyday tools, photographs, and household pieces of the families who stayed once the pine was gone. It is the kind of small-town museum where the building itself is half the exhibit. You walk through a lumberman’s actual rooms while you read about the industry that built them.

There is a tidy circle to it. A man made his money cutting Mecosta County’s trees, built a fine house with the proceeds, and that very house now holds the record of the boom that paid for it — passed down, in the end, to the town he helped build.
