Hart has no city income tax
Money and taxes
Michigan is one of the states that lets cities charge their own income tax on top of the state’s. About two dozen Michigan cities do it, including big ones like Detroit and Grand Rapids. Hart, the only city in Oceana County, is not one of them. Live in Hart and you’ll pay the state income tax, but no separate city income tax on top of it.
The one thing worth knowing is that a city income tax usually follows the job, not just the home. If you live in Oceana County but drive to work in a city that does levy one, you may owe that city a smaller nonresident rate. The closest city of that kind, Muskegon, is a good drive to the south, so for most people working close to home it simply doesn’t come up. As always, the rules can change, so it’s worth a quick check if your work takes you to a bigger city.
