Is there a city income tax in Baraga County?

Money and taxes

baraga county l'anse income tax taxes

Good news for anyone moving to Baraga County: there’s no city income tax here. In fact, the county has no cities at all — its two incorporated communities are the villages of L’Anse, the county seat, and Baraga, just across the bay. Everywhere else is township land.

That matters because Michigan’s city income tax can only be levied by cities — not villages, not townships. About two dozen Michigan cities charge one, including Detroit and Grand Rapids, but there are none anywhere in the Upper Peninsula, and certainly none up here. The nearest town that charges a local income tax is Grayling, down in the Lower Peninsula and well over a hundred miles away. So as a Baraga County resident, the income taxes you’ll pay are the federal and the state — Michigan’s flat state income tax — and that’s it. Your local taxes here come through your property tax bill, not your paycheck.
