Buell Lake Park pairs fishing with model airplanes

Thetford Township's 213-acre county park combines a no-wake lake, a one-mile trail, disc golf, and a dedicated field for radio-controlled model airplanes.

genesee county county parks fishing model airplanes

Buell Lake County Park spreads across 213 acres on the north side of Thetford Township. The lake side has a boat ramp, fishing access, ball fields, playgrounds, and picnic pavilions. Buell Lake is a no-wake lake, and a one-mile trail begins near the boat ramp. Genesee County estimates an easy walk takes about 25 minutes.

The surprise is across Genesee Road. Buell Lake has a dedicated field for radio-controlled model airplanes. Next to it is a free 18-basket disc-golf course, with the fairways also adding room to walk through the park.

That combination gives this rural county park a personality of its own. One visit can mean fishing from shore, walking a loop, throwing a disc, and watching small aircraft circle above an open field.

The regular park hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. The lake and playground use one entrance, while the airfield and disc-golf course use another. That split matters when deciding where to park.

Where to see it

Use 14098 N. Genesee Road for the lake, playground, and boat ramp; the model-airplane and disc-golf side is at 13365 N. Genesee Road.
