Six Lakes, named by counting
The community of Six Lakes sits in Belvidere Township beside a chain whose names run plainly from First Lake through Sixth Lake.
Whoever named the lakes around here kept things simple. There are six in the chain, and they are called First Lake, Second Lake, Third Lake, Fourth Lake, Fifth Lake, and Sixth Lake. The community nearby took the obvious name: Six Lakes.
Belvidere Township’s master plan places the six lakes in the township’s northeast quarter, running west to east. They range from about 20 to 70 acres: Fifth Lake is about 70 acres, while Third Lake is about 20.
The plain numbering is its own small charm. Michigan has plenty of Crystal, Diamond, Clear, and Mirror lakes. Here the official map gives the lakes an order and stops at six. The place name tells you exactly which local feature matters.
The township still uses “Chain of Six Lakes” as its public identity. First Lake Park provides local lake access and a seasonal campground. The community name is not a slogan invented after the fact. It is a compact description of the landscape around it.
