Wind energy: an active local issue

Home and property

montcalm county wind energy home buying rural land

If you’re buying rural land or acreage in Montcalm County, wind energy is worth understanding. A large wind-turbine project was proposed here in recent years, but after a long and heated local debate — with township votes, recalls, and packed meetings — the developer dropped it, and no wind farm operates in the county today. As of 2026, though, the issue isn’t settled: another company has begun exploring a new project, and a 2023 state law now lets the Michigan Public Service Commission approve large wind and solar projects even when local townships object.

What this means for you as a buyer: if you purchase rural land, you could be approached about signing a wind-lease agreement for your property, and a future project could be sited nearby. Feelings about turbines run strong here, on both sides. None of this affects a typical in-town home, but if you’re buying acreage it’s smart to ask around locally about the current status before you buy.
