Tip-Up Town USA: Houghton Lake's winter on the ice
History and culture
Houghton Lake doesn’t go quiet when the lake freezes — it throws a party on the ice. Every January the Houghton Lake area hosts Tip-Up Town USA, billed as Michigan’s longest-running winter festival, going strong since the early 1950s. The name comes from the “tip-up,” the little flag rig ice anglers use to signal a bite. Over the last two weekends of January the frozen lake fills up with an ice-fishing contest, snowmobile and side-by-side races, a polar-bear dip, carnival rides, food, live music, and a crowned festival queen — and it draws thousands of visitors to town.
For a buyer, the festival says something useful about the area: this is a true four-season resort, busiest in summer but with a real winter pull as well. If you’re looking near the lake, plan on lively, crowded weekends in late January — a plus if you love the energy, and worth knowing if you’d rather keep things quiet.
The Houghton Lake Chamber of Commerce runs Tip-Up Town and posts each year’s dates and full schedule.
