The town that moved so a mine could swallow its old ground

There’s an observation deck on the edge of Republic where you can look straight down into a hole 600 feet deep, mostly filled with still green water. That hole used to have a town next to it. The town is the reason the deck has railings.

Republic was born in 1871 as a mining village — locals called it Iron City — and the iron under it turned out to be some of the best in the country. The first life of the Republic Mine ran underground from the 1870s until it closed around 1926, after shipping millions of tons of ore. Then, in the 1950s, Cleveland-Cliffs and its partners came back and started over, this time tearing the ore out from above as a vast open pit. The pit kept growing until it needed the ground the village stood on, so part of Republic was simply picked up and rebuilt a few miles south. The mine ate the old neighborhood.

By 1981 the costs were too high and a recession finished it, and the pumps stopped. Groundwater did the rest, slowly flooding the pit into the 250-acre, 600-foot-deep pool you see now. The overburden, tailings, and old works around it sprawl across several square miles.

What makes it worth the drive is that you can actually see it. The Republic overlook is the only open-pit iron mine in Michigan set up for the public to view, for free, with interpretive markers that lay out the mine’s two lives and the strange episode of moving the town. Stand at the rail and it’s quiet — a flooded canyon where the engines used to roar — and somewhere under that green water is the ground people once lived on.
