Is the Whole Lower Peninsula Really Shaped Like a Mitten — and What's "The Thumb"?

A specific follow-up people ask constantly, especially newcomers reading a weather map: what is “the Thumb”?

Look at your right hand, palm out — that’s the Lower Peninsula. The main part is the four fingers and the broad palm. And sticking out to the east, into Lake Huron, is the thumb. That region of Michigan — the actual thumb-shaped part jutting into the lake, including counties like Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac — is genuinely, officially nicknamed “the Thumb.” When a Michigan weather forecaster says “rain moving into the Thumb tonight,” they mean exactly the spot you’d point to on your hand. It’s farm country, quiet and flat, known for sugar beets and beans.

This is part of why the whole “use your hand as a map” thing works so well in Michigan, and it’s not just a cute habit — it’s genuinely practical. The Lower Peninsula really does look that much like a right-hand mitten, so Michiganders give directions by pointing at their palm: Detroit is down at the base of the thumb, Grand Rapids is over on the pinky side, Traverse City is up near the ring fingertip, and the Thumb is, well, the thumb.

The shape itself is an accident of the Ice Age — glaciers carving out the basins that became Lake Michigan (the west side of the mitten) and Lake Huron with Saginaw Bay (which scooped out the gap between the thumb and the fingers). Nature just happened to leave behind something that looks like a hand.

Where to see it

Drive out to Port Austin, right at the tip of the Thumb, where Lake Huron wraps around the point — and you're literally standing at the top of your own thumb on the map.
