Why is car insurance so expensive around here?
Cars and driving
If you’re moving to the Detroit area from out of state, brace yourself for the car insurance bill. Michigan has long been one of the most expensive states in the country for auto insurance, mostly because of its unusual “no-fault” system, which has historically required generous medical coverage. A 2019 reform let drivers choose lower coverage levels and brought prices down somewhat, but rates here are still high — and they swing wildly depending on exactly where you live. In fact, Michigan has the biggest gap between its priciest and cheapest cities of any state: the difference can run more than $400 a month for the very same coverage. Metro Detroit — including inner-ring Macomb suburbs like Warren, Eastpointe, Roseville, and Center Line — sits in the most expensive zone. The reform technically banned insurers from setting prices by ZIP code, but it still lets them use “territories,” so your address keeps a big thumb on the scale. The practical takeaway: rates change often and vary a lot between companies, so it pays to compare several quotes for your specific address before you buy.
