Metamora's horse farms and hunt-country history

Metamora’s horse-country reputation is real, but it is better understood as a local identity than a statewide title. Metamora Township describes wide-open parcels used for horseback riding and agriculture, and says the countryside has drawn horse lovers for generations. Horse farms and the Metamora Hunt are part of what makes this corner of Lapeer County feel different from a typical outer suburb.

The hunt’s own history explains how that pattern formed. Foxhunting began around Grosse Pointe in the early 1900s. As development reduced the open land closer to Detroit, members connected with the Bloomfield Open Hunt began looking farther north in the late 1920s. A charter group assembled roughly 15 square miles across parts of Metamora, Dryden, Oxford, and Addison townships, and kennels and staff quarters were built in 1929. That is why the safer description is that the club established its Metamora hunt country in the late 1920s, rather than pinning everything to one founding date.

In the village, the White Horse Inn adds another layer of history. Its building began as a general store in 1848. Lorenzo Hoard converted it into an inn and stagecoach stop in 1850. The restaurant later closed and was restored before reopening in 2014, so “historic inn” is clearer than an unqualified claim that it is one of Michigan’s oldest restaurants.

For public outdoor access, head west to Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area. The DNR says the 723-acre park surrounds Lake Minnawanna and includes a campground, a designated swimming area, fishing and paddling access, picnic areas, and six miles of hiking and biking trails.
