Lake Minnawanna and the 700 acres around it

A short drive south of Lapeer, the land folds into low hills and a state park hides 80 acres of water behind the trees: Lake Minnawanna, the centerpiece of the Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area. The park runs to about 723 acres in all, mostly woods and shoreline in Hadley Township, and it’s the kind of place families have been coming to for generations to pitch a tent and swim.

The lake does the heavy lifting. There’s a designated swim beach, a fishing pier built out over the water, and quiet coves to paddle a canoe or kayak into. Anglers work it for bluegill, bass, and the rest of the warm-water lineup. Around the lake runs about six miles of trail, easy walking through hardwoods that turn loud with color in October and fill with bird song in spring. The campground stays busy all summer, close enough to metro Detroit for a weekend but far enough out to feel like real country.

The double name is a tell. The park sits where Metamora and Hadley townships meet, hunt-country horse farms on one side and rolling farmland on the other, and rather than pick a favorite the state just named it for both. “Minnawanna” gives the water a softer, older sound than the surveyor’s grid all around it.

Come on a hot Saturday and the beach is loud with kids, coolers, and the smack of a screen door at the bathhouse. Come on a gray Tuesday in November and you might have the whole shoreline to yourself, the lake flat and steel-colored, a heron standing in the shallows working the same water McArthur’s otters would have understood.
