The Lapeer State Game Area: thousands of public acres on the Flint River bottomland

Outdoors

hunting lapeer county

A surprising slice of central Lapeer County belongs to everyone. The Lapeer State Game Area runs to several thousand acres, spread across more than one township and tied together by the Flint River system winding through its low ground.

Don’t picture a mowed park with picnic tables. A state game area is working habitat, managed on purpose to grow wildlife rather than lawns — a patchwork of woods, fields, marsh, and river bottomland that floods and dries on its own schedule. The state began buying this ground up in the 1940s with a double goal that still runs the place: protect the wildlife, and keep the land open to the public. Both halves hold. In fall the parking lots fill with hunters after deer, rabbit, pheasant, and ducks; the rest of the year the same trails carry dog-walkers, birders, and people who just want somewhere quiet to put a few miles on their boots.

Tucked inside the game area, off Roods Lake Road, the DNR runs the Lapeer Shooting Range — a staffed public range with lanes for rifle, pistol, and shotgun, so the target practice has somewhere legal and supervised to happen instead of wandering off into the woods.

The appeal is the part you can’t buy: no membership, no gate code, no stretch of lakefront required. If you hunt, here’s your ground. If you don’t, it’s a few thousand acres of marsh and timber you’re already an owner of. Two practical truths come with that — seasons and licenses are set by the state and shift year to year, and during firearm deer season you want blaze orange on, because plenty of other owners are out there too.
