Two sisters who left their whole house to Michigan

History and culture

museum jackson county

Daniel and Ellen Mann built their house on Hanover Street in Concord in 1883 and 1884, and for a farm couple of that era they were an unusual pair — both college educated, both curious about whatever was new. They wanted a place in the village so their two daughters, Jessie and Mary Ida, could walk to school. The girls grew up in that house. Then, more or less, they never left.

The Manns liked being first. They had Concord’s first telephone wired in around 1900, and added electric lights and indoor plumbing roughly a decade later. Jessie took a University of Michigan degree in 1906 and went off to teach mathematics, mostly in Battle Creek, but the house stayed the family’s anchor. Neither sister married. Mary Ida died in 1959; Jessie lived on alone in the home until her death in 1969.

Here’s the part that makes the place rare. The sisters’ wills left the house — not just the building, but the furniture, the dishes, the linens, the family’s whole accumulated life — to the people of Michigan, to be kept as a museum. The state accepted in 1969 and opened it to the public in October 1970. Because nobody cleared it out and nobody redecorated, you’re not looking at a curated “1880s parlor” assembled from antique shops. You’re looking at the Manns’ actual things, in the Manns’ actual rooms.

That’s the quiet draw of the place: it’s a real Victorian household that simply stopped, with the people who lived it stepping aside and handing you the key. Concord is a small village, and the Mann House sits right in it — a whole family’s century, left where they set it down.
