Porch Notes
The quieter corners: Norwood, Wilson, Hudson, and Chandler
Outdoors
Away from Lake Charlevoix and the resort towns, Charlevoix County has a quieter, more rural side — rolling farmland, hardwood forest, small lakes, and back roads. Norwood Township, in the county’s southwest corner, runs along Lake Michigan: Norwood Township Park has a stretch of public beach, and part of Fisherman’s Island State Park’s wild shoreline lies here. Inland, Wilson, Hudson, and Chandler townships are mostly woods and farm country tucked between the bigger towns.
These townships have their own hidden gems. Hudson Township holds Thumb Lake, a deep, clear kettle lake ringed by forest. The Little Traverse Conservancy protects nature preserves and working forestland scattered across this part of the county, so a lot of the woods will stay woods. It’s the kind of country where land is more affordable and lots are larger than near the water.
For buyers, this is where you look for acreage, a quiet building site, or a more budget-friendly foothold in a beautiful county — while still being a reasonable drive from Charlevoix, Boyne City, or East Jordan and all the lakes. Homes out here run on private wells and septic systems (see the well-and-septic note), and a lot of the land is wooded, so think about access, the driveway, and where utilities run.
