Boyne Mountain and Boyne Falls
Outdoors
Tucked in the hills southeast of Lake Charlevoix, the village of Boyne Falls and surrounding Boyne Valley Township are best known as the home of Boyne Mountain — one of Michigan’s largest and oldest ski resorts. It was started back in the late 1940s by Everett Kircher, who famously bought the land for a dollar and went on to build a whole resort empire from this spot.
Today Boyne Mountain is a true four-season destination: dozens of downhill ski runs and tubing in winter, two championship golf courses in summer, and Avalanche Bay, one of Michigan’s largest indoor waterparks, year-round. The little village of Boyne Falls, right on US-131, has Polish roots and throws a popular Polish Festival each summer. The Boyne River and the Boyne Mountain area also offer trout fishing and miles of trails.
For buyers, this corner of the county mixes resort property and condos near the slopes with affordable wooded acreage just beyond. If you want ski-in convenience or a quiet place in the hills within minutes of a major resort, this is the spot. Homes outside the village are on wells and septic (see the well-and-septic note).
