Standish: the county seat and gateway to the Sunrise Coast

History and culture

arenac county standish sunrise coast county seat history culture

Standish is Arenac County’s seat and its busiest crossroads. It sits right where I-75 and US-23 split: from here, I-75 heads inland toward the north, and US-23 peels off to follow the Lake Huron shore. That makes Standish the traditional “gateway to the Sunrise Side” — the start of the scenic US-23 route up the coast.

The town’s landmark is the restored Standish Depot, an old railroad station that now serves as a welcome center for travelers heading up the Sunrise Coast. Standish also has the county’s main stores, services, and schools, so even people who live out in the townships tend to come here for the everyday stuff.

For buyers, Standish is the practical hub of the county — close to the highway, the bay, and the rivers, with more amenities than anywhere else in Arenac.
