Inland Arenac: rivers, woods, and the Rifle
Outdoors
Away from the bay, Arenac County is rivers and woods. Three rivers run down through the county to Lake Huron — the Rifle, the Au Gres, and the Pine — and they’re a big part of life out here. The Rifle River is the star: a dam-free, state-designated Natural River, it’s a favorite for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing — gentle and shallow enough for families — plus good fishing for everything from trout upstream to walleye and the spring sucker run near the mouth.
There’s plenty of public land too. State forest covers a good share of the inland townships — great for hunting, hiking, and just having woods next door — and the Wigwam Bay State Wildlife Area near the shore is a draw for birders and waterfowl hunters.
For buyers looking at inland property, the appeal is space, quiet, and quick access to a river or the woods. As with anywhere rural here, you’ll be on a well and septic, so factor that in — and it’s worth checking how close a place sits to river access or public land.
