Swartz Creek is named for the color of its water — 'black' in German

The name is half English, half German, and it describes a stream’s color. Swartz is close to the German word for black, and the creek that runs through town carries dark, tannin-stained water — the kind that picks up its tint from leaves and low, mucky ground. Settlers from German country looked at that water, called it the black creek, and the name stuck to the whole community.

It didn’t start out as Swartz Creek, though. In June 1836 a German immigrant named Adam Miller arrived from New York with his wife Margaret and their eleven children, and put down roots in what was then Flint Township. For years people called the spot Miller Settlement, after the family that cleared it. Miller and his sons hacked a road out of the woods to connect their farms to Flint — cutting trees and brush by hand — and that path is still here, running across the south side of town as Miller Road.

The post office is where the name finally flipped. When Washington opened a post office for the area in the 1840s, it took the creek’s name rather than the family’s, and Miller Settlement quietly became Swartz Creek. The railroad reached town in 1876, sugar beets became a cash crop, and beet-weighing stations dotted the line — but the city itself didn’t formally incorporate until December 1959, more than 120 years after Adam Miller’s wagon first rolled in.

So the place is named twice over for things that were here first: a German word for a creek’s tea-colored water, and a family road that’s now just another street you drive without thinking about the eleven kids who helped chop it through the trees.
