Scout projects added fitness stations and disc golf to Salem Township Park

Salem Township Park combines courts, fields, a three-quarter-mile nature trail, fitness stations, and disc golf built through grants, donations, and local Scout projects.

Salem Township Park grew through a mix of public money and small local projects. A Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant helped establish it, alongside township funds and donations from area businesses and residents. That foundation produced a surprisingly broad park for a rural township.

The grounds include a playground, tennis and basketball courts, sand volleyball, a picnic shelter with grills, and a field shared by soccer and baseball. A three-quarter-mile nature trail winds through trees and past benches. The township does not take reservations for the shelter, courts, or fields. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Two Scout projects added the details that make the park more unusual. Chris LaRoche of Troop 96 installed an outdoor fitness circuit with a chin-up bar, vertical climb, step-up, sit-up bench, parallel bars, and balance beam. Zach Woodwyk of Troop 147 added a disc-golf course. Those projects fit the way the park was built: not as one large construction job, but through grants, donations, township work, and residents adding useful pieces over time.
