Pennfield's park plan became a half-mile walking loop

Pennfield now has a dawn-to-dusk walking park beside Hicks Cemetery, with a half-mile path, pavilion, benches, grills, and room for a quiet lap.

calhoun county walking township parks

Pennfield Township did not own or manage a park when it prepared its 2023 recreation plan. Residents could use school grounds or parks in nearby Battle Creek and Calhoun County, but the township wanted a public place of its own. Its highest short-term priority was a park on cemetery property, with picnic space and unpaved walking trails.

The township’s current park page describes that kind of place beside Hicks Cemetery on M-66 North. Pennfield Walking Park is open from dawn until dusk. Its centerpiece is a winding half-mile path with benches along the way. A pavilion has four picnic tables and two grills, and the site includes a portable restroom and a dog-waste station.

This is a modest park, built for an easy walk rather than a full day of recreation. That is also what makes it useful. A township that once had to map every nearby park now has a simple loop where neighbors can meet, sit, and stretch their legs close to home.

The path is for walking only. The township does not allow bicycles, motorcycles, cars, or other motorized vehicles on it.

Where to see it

Use the first Hicks Cemetery entrance on M-66 North. The township lists dawn-to-dusk hours and parking inside the fenced area.
