Otsego Lake
Outdoors
Otsego Lake is the county’s namesake and its biggest draw for lake lovers — a long, clear lake just south of Gaylord, ringed by year-round homes, cottages, and a state park. It sits high up, well over 1,200 feet above sea level, which keeps the water cool and the summers comfortable. Otsego Lake State Park, on the southeast shore, is one of Michigan’s oldest — part of the very first round of state parks created back in 1920 — with a sandy swimming beach, a campground, and boat access.
The lake straddles two townships: its southern half is in Otsego Lake Township, and its northern and eastern shores are in Bagley Township, the busier, more developed side closer to Gaylord. People come for swimming, boating, fishing for bass and panfish, and easy access to town — I-75 runs right alongside.
If you’re shopping for a place on or near the lake, the usual waterfront questions apply: how the lot meets the water, the age of the septic system (see the well-and-septic note), and whether you’re buying actual frontage or lake access through an association. Lakefront here holds its value, so it’s worth getting the details right.
