The Rifle River Recreation Area, in your backyard
The Rifle River Recreation Area gives the Lupton and Rose City area a major state-park backyard.
One of the best outdoor spots in this part of Michigan sits right here near Lupton: the Rifle River Recreation Area. It’s a 4,400-acre state park on the upper Rifle River. There’s a string of lakes, sandy swim beaches, miles of trails, and both modern and rustic campgrounds. It started out as a wealthy auto executive’s private hunting-and-fishing retreat called Grousehaven. It became state land in the 1940s and has been a public recreation area since 1963.
For people who live nearby, it’s basically a giant backyard. Canoe or kayak the Rifle, fish for trout, hike or mountain bike in summer, ski cross-country in winter, and swim or paddle the lakes. The Rifle River itself is a state-designated Natural River: dam-free, clean, and gentle. It’s known as one of the most popular canoeing rivers in Michigan.
If you’re buying near Lupton or Rose City, this kind of public-land access is a big part of the draw. You’re minutes from one of the nicest state parks in the region.
