Little Sable Point: the bare brick light below the dunes

Most Great Lakes lighthouses wear a coat of white paint. Little Sable Point never has. The tower stands a couple of miles down the shore from the Silver Lake dunes in their own bare red brick, more than a hundred feet of it, plain as a chimney against the blue. That honesty is half its charm — you can read the brickwork course by course, all the way to the gallery rail at the top.

The light went up in 1874, ten years after a schooner named the Pride wrecked on this stretch and people started asking for a beacon. Builders had to barge the materials in because there were no roads to the point, then drive the foundation deep into loose sand before they could lay a single brick. The first keepers called it by its French name, Petite Pointe Au Sable — “little point of sand” — which is exactly what it is.

Climb the spiral stair inside, a hundred-odd cast-iron steps, and you reach the lantern room and the lens that has been throwing light here since the start: a third-order Fresnel, ground in Paris, a beehive of glass prisms that gathers a small flame into a beam ships could see far out on the lake. It is the original. That is rare; most old lenses were pulled and scrapped when the Coast Guard automated its lights.

The point sits inside Silver Lake State Park, so the same recreation passport that gets you onto the dunes gets you to the lighthouse. Volunteer keepers open the tower in the warm months and take the climbing fee to keep the brick sound. Come at the end of the day. The light faces straight into the sunset, and the beach below it is one of the quieter ones on this busy shore.
