Oakland University began with a 1,400-acre gift and a barn full of classrooms

The first students at Oakland University took notes in a place they called the “Poultry Parlors” — a cluster of old chicken coops and farm buildings, because that is what the campus was when it opened. The whole thing started as somebody’s working estate, given away in one of the largest gifts in Michigan history.

In 1957, Matilda Dodge Wilson — widow of the auto pioneer John Dodge — and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, announced they were handing over their land near Rochester: roughly 1,400 acres of farmland and rolling hills, plus two million dollars, to build a college from scratch. Michigan State took on the job, and classes began in 1959 under the mouthful Michigan State University–Oakland, in whatever buildings the farm already had. It shortened to Oakland University in time to hand out its first diplomas in 1963, and split off fully from MSU in 1970.

The Wilsons did not give away everything. Their 88,000-square-foot Tudor mansion, Meadow Brook Hall, still sits on the grounds — one of the largest historic homes in the country, with a working pipe organ and a separate playhouse the family built for daughter Frances. Students walk past it on the way to class.

Today around 15,000 students fill a campus that still spreads across those original acres, deer and all. From farmland to a public research university with a medical school and a hospital partner took barely a lifetime — a reminder that not every old institution grew slowly. Some of them arrived almost overnight because two people decided to give their farm to the future.
