The nature center that teaches you how a dune works

A sand dune is not a big static pile of sand. It crawls. It breathes. It buries forests and uncovers them again over centuries, and there’s a whole building at the edge of Norton Shores devoted to showing you exactly how.

The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center sits tucked into the wooded backdune of P.J. Hoffmaster State Park — about 1,200 acres of forest and roughly three miles of Lake Michigan beach. Inside, dioramas, audio and video displays, and hands-on exhibits walk you through how a Great Lakes dune forms, marches inland on the wind, and somehow grows a living skin of beach grass, pines, and animals on top of all that shifting sand. From the center you can climb the dune-overlook stairway for a long view out over the lake, then take a gentler trail down to the water.

The name on the door belongs to Genevieve Gillette, a Michigan landscape architect who spent her career tramping the state scouting parcels worth saving and lobbying to turn them into public parks. A surprising share of Michigan’s state-park system traces back to land she pushed to protect. So the building honors two things at once: the dune itself, and the stubborn people who fought to keep places like this open to everybody instead of carved into private lots.

Walk the overlook once you’ve gone through the exhibits and you’ll see it differently — not a beach to flop on but a slow-motion landform with a few thousand years of momentum behind it. It’s also a fine place to duck out of the sun or wait out a squall with kids who’ve had enough sand for one afternoon.
