Four Winds Casino and the Pokagon Band
History and culture
Just off I-94 near New Buffalo sits Four Winds, one of southwest Michigan’s biggest entertainment destinations. It’s a casino, hotel, and resort owned and run by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, a Native American tribe whose ties to this corner of Michigan and northern Indiana go back generations. The U.S. government formally reaffirmed the tribe’s standing in 1994, and the band opened Four Winds here in 2007 as the first of its several casinos.
The building is designed to reflect Potawatomi tradition — you enter through a big round lodge-style rotunda with fireplaces and murals telling the tribe’s story. Beyond the gaming floor there are restaurants, an events venue that draws touring concerts, and a hotel, and the resort is one of the area’s larger employers. (Like all casinos, it’s adults-only on the gaming floor — 21 and up.)
