Naubinway, the top of Lake Michigan
Outdoors
Keep driving west on US-2 and you’ll reach Naubinway, a tiny fishing village with a claim to fame: it’s the northernmost town on Lake Michigan, the only one of the Great Lakes that lies entirely within the United States. There’s a giant map of Michigan down at the township marina marking the northernmost point — a favorite photo stop for travelers on the Top of the Lake scenic drive.
Naubinway has been a fishing town since the early 1800s, and it still is — it’s the largest commercial fishing port in the Upper Peninsula, and you can often buy fresh whitefish or trout straight off the dock. The town is also home to the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum, with its big collection of antique and vintage sleds, and there’s a state forest campground right on the Lake Michigan beach nearby. In winter, this is deep snow country, and snowmobile trails run right through town.
For buyers, Naubinway is about as quiet and remote as the eastern Upper Peninsula gets — a small, friendly community on a beautiful stretch of Lake Michigan, surrounded by forest, where the fishing boats still head out in the morning mist.
