The Christmas Eve That Calumet Never Forgot

History and culture

This one is true, and it’s heavy. We tell it not for a scare but because it really happened, and the people deserve to be remembered.

In December 1913, the copper miners of Calumet, up in the Keweenaw Peninsula, had been on strike for five months. They were asking for safer conditions, shorter days, and union recognition. Money was thin and the winter was hard. So on Christmas Eve, the women’s auxiliary of the miners’ union threw a party for the families — about 500 children and 175 adults packed into a second-floor hall in a building called the Italian Hall. There was a Christmas tree, singing, and presents for the kids.

As the children lined up to receive their gifts, someone near the entrance yelled “Fire!”

There was no fire. But the crowd panicked and rushed for the only stairway down — a steep, narrow staircase. People fell, and others fell on top of them, and the stairwell became impassable. When it was over, 73 people had died, crushed and suffocated. Fifty-nine of them were children. The youngest was two years old. To this day, despite a coroner’s inquest and even a congressional hearing, no one knows who shouted the word, or why.

It remains one of the worst single-day losses of life in Michigan history. The Italian Hall building was torn down in 1984, but the community saved the sandstone arch that had stood over its front entrance — the very doorway through which the families came that night. In 1989 the village built a small memorial park around it.

Where to see it

The Italian Hall Memorial Park stands at the corner of Seventh and Elm Streets in Calumet, where the sandstone arch and a granite memorial listing all 73 names remain. It's part of the area administered by Keweenaw National Historical Park, whose visitor center in Calumet tells the fuller story of the copper strike.
