Hesperia: a White River village split clean down the county line

History and culture

history newaygo county

Walk across Hesperia and you can change counties without leaving the village. The line between Newaygo and Oceana runs right through town, with the Denver Township side in Newaygo County and the Newfield Township side in Oceana — one little community whose property and tax records live in two different courthouses, depending on which bank of the White River your house sits on.

The river is the whole reason there’s a town here at all. Loggers came in the 1860s to float white pine down the White River to the sawmills, and a dam went up around that same time to power a mill and hold a pond. The village platted in 1866 and incorporated in 1883, and like a lot of Michigan timber towns it had to find a second life once the big pine was gone. It found it in the water it already had.

That water is some of the best trout fishing in this corner of the state. The White rises near White Cloud, runs west through Hesperia, then bends southwest into Oceana County on its way to White Lake and Lake Michigan. The stretch around the village holds wild brown and rainbow trout, and the dam at the edge of town is the last barrier before the river opens up to runs of steelhead and salmon coming in from the big lake.

It makes for a strange civic life — a place where the fire siren is heard in two counties at once, and where “which side of the river are you on” is a question with a paperwork answer. Stand on the bridge over the White and you’re looking at the seam where two counties were stitched together and a town grew up right on the stitch.
