The Grand Traverse Bay shore and Elk Rapids

Outdoors

Antrim County’s western edge is Lake Michigan — specifically the east shore of Grand Traverse Bay, with US-31 tracing the water past sandy beaches and little harbor towns. The bay water is cold, clear, and big, and the sunsets are the kind people drive up north for.

The hub of this side of the county is Elk Rapids, a village built on a narrow neck of land between Elk Lake and the bay, with the short Elk River running through the middle. It’s a postcard of a small Great Lakes town: a busy marina and harbor, two public beaches, and a walkable downtown of shops, galleries, and restaurants along River Street. Elk Rapids was actually Antrim’s first county seat and an iron-and-lumber boomtown in the 1800s before it reinvented itself as a vacation town. North along the shore, Eastport and Atwood are quieter, with a county park and more Lake Michigan beach.

For buyers, this is prime — and pricey — water country. Bay frontage commands a premium, and even a short walk to the water adds value. As with any waterfront here, look carefully at how your lot meets the lake, whether access is private or shared, and the condition of any older septic system (a couple of these townships require a time-of-transfer inspection — see the well-and-septic note).
